Write a research paper on a topic of your choosing that connects to Islamophobia. Your paper may address subjects as diverse as Islamophobia and Racism, Islamophobia and Gender, the historical basis of Islamophobia, Islamophobia and 9/11, Islamophobia and funding, Islamophobia and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Islamophobia among Muslims, Islamophobia and Narrative of Modernity (savages – civilization), Islamophobia and rightwing politics, Islamophobia in Europe, Islamophobia and presidential elections, Islamophobia and Trump, Islamophobia and U.S. Foreign policy, Islamophobia in Dearborn, Islamophobia and the clash of civilizations, lived experiences of Islamophobia etc. The list goes on and on! (Look for more inspiration in our syllabus).

However you approach these subjects, you will need to do so from an anthropological perspective. This means first that you should look for anthropologically informed sources (such as anthrosource) when possible and second that you take the approach of an anthropologist in your research: cultural relativity, critically analyzing your own categories, awareness of ideas like ethnocentrism, culture, power, racism, and so on.

For this research paper, you are required to use at least 3 peer-reviewed journal articles in order to build your arguments for your research paper. Please format your in-text citations and bibliography in AAA style, which follows the Chicago Manual of Style , 16th edition (Author-date). You paper should also use other sources in your analysis, whether a website, newspaper article, or historical archive of some sort in your analysis. The best essays will use these latter materials critically.

This paper should be typed and double spaced in Times New Roman 12 pt font and should be uploaded as a single word document. You may consult your notes and other course materials for this exam. You may even cite them. However, you need 3 additional peer-reviewed journal articles as well. This paper should be approximately 7 pages in length.

This essay is worth 30 percent of your grade. It has the following steps.

1) topic identification worksheet due 11/14 at 12:30pm (5%) – done

2) annotated bibliography, outline, and thesis statement due 11/21 at 12:30pm (5%)

3) first draft (with peer review) due on 11/21 at 12:30pm – Bring a Paper Copy!!! (10%)

4) final essay due on 11/21 at 11:59pm (10%)
