1. This Civilisation Is Finished was an intense read for many reasons. It is a little scary to think that life as we know it can and probably will end because of irreversible damage done to our planet. The unnecessary damage we caused, and will continue to cause because of money, greed, and ignorance. However, like Rupert Read mentioned, it is important that we all talk about it. As Read listed the only options we have, he explained that he meant this civilisation is over, but that doesn’t mean a new one cannot begin (still very scary and unlikely). One chapter of the book stood out to me the most. Read explained one of the ways we can help, if it is not already too late, is to stop doing the majority of the things we do every day. In chapter four, they discuss how people try to plant trees and things like that to help the environment; and although it does help, it’s not enough because the damaging actions that got us here are still taking place. So, Read explained we need to stop and let nature heal itself. That means stop messing with the Amazon, stop destroying nature to build a city, just to leave everything alone. The problem is, that is how a lot of companies and businesses make their money. And as we have seen for decades, they are not going to give that up. Billionaires can fund the resources to save our planet and they most likely have not because it would interfere with their investments and money. So to my understanding, one of the simplest ways to save the planet cannot be achieved because of greed. I know there are things we can do as a whole that would help, like not littering or using too much plastic, but how can we ever make real progress if we have to deal with rich companies not wanting to stop their production?
