Please watch the entire video and respond to the following questions. YOU WILL BE GRADED BASED ON THE QUALITY OF YOUR RESPONSE. Responding to each other will help. Details count.

Before you begin I must provide a WARNING. This video explores the horror of war in a very graphic way and parts of it are not easy to watch. I am showing it to you because as college students you need to understand and appreciate the reality of what war does to civilian populations. Some of my students have experienced war and some have been spared the pain caused by war. In each case, make sure that you feel mentally ready before you begin the video. If you have any concerns please email me.

Please answer the following questions in the discussion. 1. Which civilian groups suffered in Europe during the war, what happened to them, and why were they targeted? 2. The United States and its allies bombed civilian targets in Germany and Japan including the use of two Atomic Bombs. Describe what happened, and offer your own opinion on whether or not the bombing was justifiable in an effort to shorten and win the war.

These are serious and highly emotional questions which require accurate knowledge of what happenedand deep thought on the part of the student to form a clear opinion. Take your time and organize your thoughts before you answer.

Review the video and your book before posting a response. To receive full credit, your response must be accurate with correct names and dates of people and places. BE CAREFUL THAT YOU DO NOT SIMPLY COPY OR “CUT AND PASTE” TEXT FROM YOUR BOOK OR THE INTERNET. You can review your book and other materials to make notes, but the writing must be totally your own or you will not receive credit.

20/20 is an excellent response with accurate information, thoughtful opinion, and insightful comments on the posts of your classmates.

18-19/20 is an excellent response with accurate information, but perhaps lacking in opinion with limited responses to your classmates.

16-17/20 is very good. Information was accurate but perhaps brief with little or no interaction with classmates.

14-15/20 is average. Information was accurate but some important issues were not addressed with some incomplete information and little or no interaction with classmates.

12-13/20 needs improvement. Some information was provided but critical information was missing and perhaps there were some errors. Spelling was poor. This seems to have been done quickly with little preparation or thought. Some parts of the response are ok, but there is much room for improvement.

Anything with a grade of 11 or less means the assignment is not satisfactory. Information is missing or not correct and it is clear that the student did not properly prepare.
