A good example of the differences between Middle Eastern and Indian traditions is each society’s treatment of women. Veiling of women in the Middle East contrasted with customs of greater public freedom, and greater emphasis of female sensuality in India. Over time, contact had more effects as patriarchal assumptions prevailed in both cultures. Indian Muslim women began to adopt the veil and gradually limited their tradition of working alongside men at agricultural tasks. Even among Hindus, at least in the upper castes, customs of greater isolation gained ground. In the system called purdah, women were not encouraged to leave their own sections of the home except under careful male supervision. Our challenge here is to realize that over time initial differences can be eroded by the example of another culture. The results can have profound impact on very personal aspects of life. Please discuss examples of this in our own society today.
