Selected City Topic Due – simply choose a city to write about in your term paper. Provide the name of the city, and the country/state where it is located.

Note that you can choose a city outside of the US, contrary to what it says in the syllabus – in fact I would encourage you to do this if you expect to be working in a different country to make the paper more useful to you.

Since you will be required to discuss a historical event from the city related to its diversity as part of the paper, I would strongly suggest that you do some preliminary internet research on the city to identify at least one historical event in the city’s history that relates to diversity (e.g. race riots, protests about inequality, immigration, etc.). Most large cities will have had many of these types of events in their history.

You are basically supposed to choose a city for the assignment, discuss the
demographics of the city, as well as discuss a historical event + a
regularly occurring current event (e.g. a parade, a fair, etc.) related to
diversity.

With that in mind, if you choose the capital city of Sri Lanka (or some
other city with a prominent history connected to the civil war) you could
certainly cover history from the city related to the civil war as part of
the historical event section – just need to explain how it ties in with
diversity/other concepts/themes from class .

In this course students will be required to research, analyze, and work on a topic–related project. In the
process of conducting appropriate library searching, proper sources for your references must contain
citable bibliographic material that is peer–reviewed and authoritative as primary sources to include in

event within this city, related to its diversity (e.g. immigration issues, protests, riots, educational
challenges, or public policy measures enacted) and explain its significance. Identify at least 1 current
event that regularly occurs within this city which celebrates its diversity (e.g. parades, festivals, fairs,
volunteer projects, and community activism). And finally, discuss what special considerations you would
be conscious of if you were to live in this city. Would you be a member of the majority or the minority?
How would the focus of your profession change if you also worked in this city?

I would like to do my paper on Sri Lanka Tamil war: The Sri Lanka Tamil War refers to the decades-long conflict that took place on the island nation of Sri Lanka, primarily between the government forces of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a militant organization that sought an independent Tamil state in the northern and eastern regions of the country.

The conflict spanned from the early 1980s until 2009 when the Sri Lankan government declared victory over the LTTE. The war was characterized by intense violence, guerrilla warfare, suicide bombings, and numerous human rights abuses on both sides.

The root causes of the conflict can be traced back to ethnic tensions between the majority Sinhalese population and the minority Tamil population. Discriminatory policies and actions by successive Sri Lankan governments against the Tamil minority, including issues related to language, education, and employment opportunities, fueled grievances that eventually escalated into a full-blown armed conflict.
