The US Capitol building did not have a women’s restroom in the part of the building where the House of Representatives meets to debate and vote on bills until 1962. In 1962 a restroom for women was built; it is about 5 minutes away from the floor of the House (the space where the representatives meet to debate and vote on bills). There is a men’s restroom directly off the floor. This distant restroom was the only one for women until 2011 when a second women’s restroom was built much closer to the floor so that women representatives did not risk missing a vote or other important event while walking to/from the restroom.
