Augmented Reality Exploration Extra Credit Assignment

In order to receive the 10 points extra credit you must complete BOTH parts 1 and 2 below and submit to Canvas by the deadline.

This assignment will require the use an android or apple smart phone/tablet that has a working camera. If you do not have access to this technology iPads are available for checkout on campus at https://library.sjsu.edu/student-computing-services/equipment-loans (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.)

If you do not wish to use this technology for any reason or need an Accessibility accommodation, please email me for an alternate low-tech assignment for equal value.

Part 1: WWF Free Rivers (The Required Part) : Start by downloading the WWF Free Rivers app, which is free of charge, in your phone’s app store, more information can be found at https://www.worldwildlife.org/pages/explore-wwf-free-rivers-a-new-augmented-reality-app (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.)

Pro tips for the app itself:

-To get the AR to engaged, your phone should be held flat pointed at a flat surface, like this: https://www.marypoffenroth.com/artutorial (Links to an external site.)

-To find the rotating blue icons and to really use the app, be prepared to physically move about your space – bending down and holding your phone at different angles, as well as closer/farther away from the floor/flat surface you chose at the beginning.

-the app does deplete your battery, so keep that in mind before you begin.

Then, explore the AR world of free flowing rivers and answer the following questions. There is sound, so make sure your phone is not on silent mode before you begin.

A. Define, in your own words, what is a free flowing river and why are they important?

  1. Fill in the blanks from your experience in the app:

A river’s flow naturally changes, depositing ________ along the way. When full, the river spills onto its _________. As the basin _________ , these __________ drain.

Dams and other infrastructure, like roads, all reduce a river’s connectivity. While the areas closest to the dam are most severely impacted, damage is seen far downstream.

  1. List some of the pros and cons of building a dam. What are some of the impacts of building a dam discussed in the app?
  1. Find the listed 4 of the 8 characters to find in the app and describe how a river impacts them below:

Fisherman

Tiger

Farmer

River Dolphin

  1. When you are finished with the game and the question pop ups asking you if you want to go to the map portion, say YES : what animal do you see on your floor?

Part 2 – Extra Credit Survey: After you have finished part 1 – complete part 2. This will be your thoughts on your experience with this assignment.

Go to: https://sjsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5j0BhPHIN3jKX9r (Links to an external site.)

Which will open an anonymous survey about your experience with this AR assignment. For those that are not doing the AR assignment, there is an optional extra credit alternate as well.

There is no right or wrong answer here. Exploring and implementing emerging technologies can be challenging and there is always room to grow. I would love to hear your candid thoughts.

Data from this optional survey will be used to study the value of using AR in college science courses. Please review the consent you are giving by doing this optional survey HERE
