In this assignment, select one form of deviant, stigmatized, or marginalized identity you have, interview someone who shares that identity (I refer to it as “deviant identity” thereafter), and analyze their experience. Your paper should discuss how your interviewee became aware of their deviant identity, how their understanding of this identity changed over time, and what triggered these changes. An interview should be audio-recorded and about 30 minutes in length. Interview Topics: Personal background. 2. Discovery of deviant identity. When did they become aware of their deviant identity (or the fact that stigma may be attached to this identity)? How did it happen? Who were involved in it? Howdid it make them feel? 3. Identity development. How did their understanding of, or sentiment toward, this identity change over time? Could they identify any stage/phase? Have they experienced any negative labeling associated with this identity? If so, how did it happen, and how did it affect them? Have they experienced any positive, affirmative or empowering experience related to this identity? If so, how did it happen, and how did it affect them? 4. Triggers of change/Agents. What triggered changes in their deviant identity? Who contributed to the development/change? Do/did they have a role model or a community of people who shares this identity? How did they affect the interviewee? Who else have affected his/her identity development? 5. Reflections on identity. How do they feel about their deviant identity now? How important it is for them? Why do they feel that way?
