Background to the Discussion:Beliefs and cultural legacies of three of the great world religions:  Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.  These faiths are commonly referred to as Western religions in contrast to Eastern religions, such as Hinduism and Buddhism.  Judaism, founded by the ancient Hebrews, is the oldest of the major world religions and is often described as the “parent” religion to both Christianity and Islam.  In this week’s focus on the rise of Christianity, you will learn about the strong connections between Judaism and Christianity.  The ancient teachings of these religions established ethical standards and beliefs that have had a profound influence on our systems of law and societal values.  In this week’s discussion forum, you will have the opportunity to explore, compare, and contrast two of the world’s oldest and most enduring ethical texts:  the “Ten Commandments” from the Hebrew Bible and Christian Old Testament, and the “Beatitudes” from Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount,” recorded in the Christian New Testament.
