For this paper I expect you to choose a concept from class and thoroughly explain it, just like with the encyclopedia paper. The difference is that in the second half of this paper you will then apply the concept to a world event. For example, say you want to write a paper about “sustainable development and the 2022 California fire season.” You would spend the first half of the paper explaining “sustainable development” as you would have in your encyclopedia paper, but, then, in the second half of the paper, you would then apply the concept of “sustainable development” to the 2022 forest fires in California. Or maybe you want to write about “Neoliberalism and the rise of Pinochet.” The first half of the paper would explain “neoliberalism,” and the second half would be on the relationship between the rise of neoliberalism and the rise of Augusto Pinochet in Chile in the mid-1970’s. Note that this is not a “current events” paper, but a “world events” paper. I make this distinction because the event you include in your paper does not have to be “current.” It can be from any time or place, so long as it helps to elucidate your chosen concept. Regardless of the concept and event you choose, the paper should reflect a solid understanding of the material you present. Like with the encyclopedia papers, these papers must be formal and well-polished. I am looking for more than a loosely coherent engagement and will grade for content as I am expecting you to have a relatively sophisticated appreciation of the concept at hand. Your first world events paper is due the Friday of week eleven( I will provide the reading), and must include content from weeks six through ten. Your second world events paper is due week fifteen, and must include content from weeks eleven through fifteen. Most of the other encyclopedia paper guidelines above also apply here. You must write on topic, you cannot include personal experiences, you are not allowed to use any quotes and will be penalized for grammatical errors.
