CC Sociological Theories In Everyday Life Discussion
Here are the initial discussion questions:
(1) Why does Seidman worry about the way that sociologists have been developing
and communicating their theories of social life? What does he see as the main
problems with the way many sociological theorists conduct their work? Do you share
his concerns? What advantages and disadvantages do you see to the way sociological
theory has been conducted?
(2) Give an example of at least one social theory that you use in everyday life. We
all have theories about how things work in our social lives, so you do not have to know
anything about individual sociological theorists. Tell us what elements of your social
life come into play and how they relate to one another. How do you use this theory in
your day-to-day life?
(3) Given what you know so far, do you think it is possible to construct any social
theory, large or small, as simple, and consistently accurate in its predictions as
Einstein’s theory of the relationship between energy and matter? If you think not, tell
us why not. If you think so, give us your reasons. Before you make up your mind,
consider that many people are trying to build theories of human behavior. They want
to do things like predict what will lead someone to buy a product, or predict whether
a convicted felon will recidivate, or predict whether two people are compatible
marital partners…and so on. Are these folks wasting their time?
