LiveWell Hospital is a 500-bed, critical access hospital that schedules between 22,000 to 26,000 visits a year. LiveWell provides surgical, medical, and acute care, 24-hour emergency room services, outpatient services, health education, behavioral services, and home and hospice care. It employs 2200 people, including 275 physicians.
You are the Assistant HIM Director at LiveWell and have been asked, by Ms. Clark, the HIM Director to accompany her to a quarterly meeting with hospital leadership and healthcare providers to discuss three agenda items: the Electronic Health Records (EHR) implementation, the clinical needs of the healthcare providers within the clinical system requirements, and the possible participation in the Health Information Exchange.
In order for both of you to be prepared for discussion at the meeting, Ms. Clark has directed you to research, analyze, and prepare a report for her review prior to the meeting on topics which she feels will be key to informing and guiding the discussion at the meeting. Her goal for the meeting discussion is to be ready to make recommendations to leadership and the healthcare providers of the next steps to take after the meeting.
INSTRUCTIONS
Prepare a report for Ms. Clark that includes the following information to be used to prepare for the discussion at the upcoming quarterly meeting:
- Analysis of the benefits of clinical decision support methods. (Using the 5 Rights of Clinical Support – Right Information, Right People, Right Channel, Right Intervention Formats, and Right Points in Workflow)
- Examination of the importance of clinical alerts and reminders in the EHR system. (Refer to the Evaluating Alerts and Triggers reading)
- Development of a plan outline to facilitate participation with healthcare providers in the development and maintenance of clinical guidelines, templates, order sets, and reporting triggers.) May also use outside resources supporting documentation.
- Justification for the HIM department’s ability to effectively manage an HIE roll-out. (Refer to the Understanding the HIE Landscape reading) – May also use outside resources supporting documentation.
