Teach thy classmate….

For this week’s assignment, I would like each student to choose an idea/topic/concept from Chapter 6 and teach it to the class.

For example, Define Maltreatment and describe the 5 types of maltreatment according to the text or… Define Sibling Sexual Abuse and cite the psychological and physical consequences of sibling sexual abuse

According to Bernett et al. (2011), there are six types of maltreatment:

Medical neglect: Caregivers fail to not obtain or delay appropriate care for the child, such as treatment for injuries, health condition, or mental health disorders; putting the child at risk of more severe illness and even death.

Neglect/deprivation of necessities: Caretaker failure to provide adequate care according to child’s age such as food, clothing, shelter, or supervision which endangered the child’s health and malnutrition.

Physical abuse: Non-accidental physical act that causes harm or injures a child such as striking, kicking, burning, orbiting the child, or any action that results in a physical impairment of the child.

Psychological/ emotional abuse: Nonphysical acts, typically verbal abuse that wears down a person’s self-esteem, and undermines their mental health causing trauma. It involves criticize, embarrass, shame, blame, deliberately trying to scare, humiliate, isolate, or ignore a child.

Sexual abuse: Sexual activity involving minors sexual exploitation for personal or financial gain. Any sexual contact or intention involving a child in pornography, molestation, statutory rape, prostitution, exposure, and incest.

Polyvictimization: Two or multiple victimization types; sexual misconduct, physical assault, psychological abuse.
