discussion and proposing a solution essay

I would like you to answer discussion questions and write a proposing a solution essay based on Discussion HW.

I only need a discussion HW within 5 hours first.

Discussion Instruction

For this module you are required to write an essay that proposes a solution to a local problem. For this discussion I’d like you to return to the assigned reading for this module.

In that article, go to the chart titled “Ways to Solve Problems.” Think about your topic in relation to that chart. Which solution type is your essay suggesting? Apply each column to your topic. In other words, how will your solution work? What does it assume to be the cause of the problem?

Please post the topic of your essay, and then explain the answers to each of these questions. Use the chart to help you. Also share and acknowledge any opposing views. Posting this will help you clarify the logic and thinking behind your solution and hopefully help you write a clear, logical essay. Feel free to email me with any questions.

My classmate’s example of discussion HW

For my problem solution essay I will be writing about a local community problem. Around my hometown litter dots the area and even though services keep things clean, sometimes it piles up. Waste is a slight issue and here is the break down for the assumed cause and the solution.

  • Problem: People are not properly disposing of waste.
  • Solution: Motivate the people.
  • How it works: Use emotional appeals or forms of advertising to reach the community in a way that they can relate.
  • Assume cause of problem: Means for keeping waste off the streets are readily available but people don’t use them. They know what’s right but don’t do it.
  • Example: Educate people through ads by telling real-life stories and giving statistics on the effects of carelessly leaving waste.

I will be organizing my essay by introducing the problem first followed by my thesis which is the solution. Each subsequent paragraph will then explain why the solution will work, how it will work, and what the expected result will be.

I would like you to do discussion HW in this style.

You have to chose a problem from the following online newspapers.

LA Times https://www.latimes.com

The San Diego Union Tribune https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com

Long Beach Press Telegram https://www.presstelegram.com

Essay 4: Proposing a Solution

(750-1000 words, 20 points)

5-paragraph essay

I would like you not to use citations.

But you can use citations only from online newspaper column you will write about.

Because this is the final shorter essay of the class, it requires you to use a combination of your critical reading and writing skills. I want you to choose an issue of current significance, one that you’ve read about in a newspaper. It MUST be a newspaper. You may not use other news sources such as television or magazines. Your newspaper should preferably be an online edition because you will be required to hand in your article with the essay you write. See the links to local newspapers below.

First, spend some time reading the newspaper. You will probably find that if you spend any time at all doing this, an article will stick with you for some reason. I often turn immediately to the Opinion pages because I like to read the Community Forum. I often find articles there that incite my reactions and that cause me to write something in response.

As you read, you may focus on any section you find interesting, and your goal is to find an article that poses a problem to which you think you have a solution. As you already know, I often suggest that students choose topics that are as close to home, as local as possible because these seem to be the most interesting to students and seem to help students produce the best writing. Ultimately, though, the choice is yours.

Here’s an example. Years ago I read a Community Forum article in our local paper, The Californian, by a student whose parents recently bought a home and moved into my area. The student was complaining about the lack of manners and general culture in our town, and he was blaming it on several factors, one of which was the fact that lots of Republicans live here. He went on to point out that Republican voters tend to be a bit unenlightened about the extent to which their party actually benefits them.

The article made me perturbed because I thought his reasons were biased and based in political generalizations. I wrote a response where I pointed out my own opinions about the reasons for the problems he raised, and I pointed out what I thought the solution might be. The conclusion of my response was a call to action, asking the folks who live in this part of the county to start realizing that we all benefit when we start making positive contributions to the community.

It felt good to be part of the local “conversation” so to speak. Here is what I want you to do. Write an essay that proposes a solution to a problem you’ve read about in the paper. Closely follow the instructions outlined in assigned reading for this module.

NOTE: As stated above, you will be required to include the original article when you hand in this essay. See the instructions for how to do this under “Submit Your Proposing a Solution Essay.”
