Discussion: TED talk: Conceptualizing GRIT

After watching the TED talk on beyond GRIT. I want to use it as a way to practice identifying independent and dependent variables and then conceptualizing those variables (this is basically the same thing I am asking you to do with your own research question, but the benefit of doing this first is that you are all working on the same concepts, so you can see how others approach the same ideas, in the next discussion forum you will all be talking about different concepts). So I am going to give you two hypotheses below. Answer the questions based on those hypotheses.

Hyp 1: Individuals with high levels of grit will be more likely to succeed in school

Hyp 2: Individuals with high levels of support will be more likely to succeed in school

1. In hypothesis 1, what is the independent variable? what is the dependent variable?

2. In hypothesis 2, what is the independent variable? what is the dependent variable?

3. when we conceptualize something it means to help decide how we will  “know it when we see it”

    a. what question(s) would you ask in a survey to conceptualize the independent variable in Hyp 1? the dependent variable in hyp 1?

    b. what question(s) would you ask in a survey to conceptualize the independent variable in Hyp 2? the dependent variable in hyp 2?
