Topic: Reconstruction
Chapters 11 and 12 of your textbook, The Struggle for Freedom, deal with efforts made by the federal government to rebuild the country after the Civil War. How did this period affect the lives of southern African Americans, the newly freed? What were some of the gains that African Americans made during the period? What types of changes—socially, politically, and economically—did African Americans experience during the period of Reconstruction, the period after the end of the Civil War? In what ways did white southerners protest Reconstruction policies? Explain the political situation that brought Reconstruction to an end. Be sure to provide specific examples from your textbook, as well as the book of readings.
