Family & Immigration Discussion
Write about your family’s story and your story as it relates to this course, especially immigration to the U.S. and/or experiences in the U.S. Go as far back as you can.
Start by introducing your family’s story and your own. For example, “For this project, I will explore my family’s history in the United States. I can go as far back as my great grandparents. They immigrated from Mexico City to Denver in 1954. My parents moved from Denver to New York City in 1995. I was born in Brooklyn in 1998 and moved to Union City in 2013.”
Include responses to the following questions in your project. These questions have been answered throughout the course in separate discussion posts:
- Do you classify your family as an ethnic minority group or racial minority group and why? Would you characterize your family as belonging to a colonized minority group or immigrant minority group? (Unit 1)
- In what ways did your family members assimilate to the dominant culture? How did they integrate into the primary and secondary sectors (give examples)? (Unit 1)
- Human capital theory states that status attainment, or the level of success an individual achieves in society, is a direct result of educational attainment, personal values and skills, and other individual characteristics and abilities. How does human capital theory apply or not apply to your family’s story (and your own)? In other words, how much of what your family has attained is direct result of their educational attainment, personal values and skills, and other individual characteristics and abilities? How much of what your family attained is a direct result of collective support (i.e., help from family, larger community, school, etc.)? (Unit 1)
- How do the concepts of multiculturism, cultural pluralism, structural pluralism, enclave minority group, middleman minority group apply or not apply to you? (Unit 1)
- The textbooks states that “The nature of dominant–minority group relations at any point in time is largely a function of the characteristics of the society as a whole. The situation of a minority group reflects the realities of everyday social life and particularly the subsistence technology (the means by which the society satisfies basic needs, such as food and shelter) …subsistence technology of a society acts as a foundation, shaping and affecting every other aspect of the social structure, including minority group relations.” Think of the kinds of jobs your family members have had over the years, what were they? How did the types of work your family members did change over time? (Unit 2)
- Has anyone in your family (including yourself) experienced prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination? If so, how? How has ideological racism and/or institutional discrimination affected opportunities in education, work, housing and more? (Unit 2)
- Which group in the textbook is most like your family’s experiences in the U.S. (i.e., history, assimilation patterns, patterns of prejudice and discrimination, etc.) and why? (Unit 7)
