film analysis paper 9

I have to write an 3 pages film analysis paper on “Too late to die young”. So watch this film first, then write the paper. no need to have fancy words.

For this assignment, you will choose one of the screenings in the series that you attended and write a short paper (3 pages). In this paper, you will develop an analysis and relate the chosen film to any aspect of Film Studies or issue examined and discussed in this course. You are required to attend a Harpur Cinema screening of the selected film, in LH 6, and may not substitute Netflix, Hulu, or other screenings for this paper.

The aim of the exercise is to write a film studies paper (NOT a film review) on a film not studied in class and to enable you to choose the reflection and analysis you want to develop. Whichever particular point or argument you choose to develop, you will do so focusing on the way of filming, NOT on the plot, but on how the story, the ideas are expressed with the technical devices of cinema. You are going to examine the way the filmmakers develop their points or commentaries, express their vision, create emotions, impact our perception, produce a particular viewing experience.

You may start from a claim you make about the film, from an idea you think is expressed more particularly (beyond the obvious story), and you explain with a close analysis how the filmmakers develop this point with their use of specific techniques. Or you may start from uses of techniques you notice more particularly, and you explain and demonstrate with your analysis what meanings these techniques create, what effects they produce for the viewer.

For example, in the film you select to work on, you might want to examine and explain l● the use of composition, depth of field, and dissolve to develop a certain social commentary, l● or how you recognize certain characteristics of Italian Neorealism, or Classical Hollywood Cinema, l● or how the style of the chosen film differs from a particular stylistic trend, l● or how it is an example of “auteur” cinema, l● or how a claim developed in one of our readings can be applied to the film or one of its scenes, etc… As usual, you will demonstrate your points, prove your claims, with the analysis of specific scenes or shots.

Additional Office Hours will be set up later in the semester for the students who want feedback before submitting their work.
