Florida Gulf Coast University Discussion The Iron Curtain Falls Discussion
Module 10 Discussion: The Iron Curtain Falls
Watch the short film “Duck and Cover” from The Atomic Café, a compilation of archival film clips created by the U.S. government during the mid 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s, a period that marks the beginning of the Cold War: the intense period of conflict between the U.S. and the Soviet Union between 1945 and 1989. Not only did these two ideologically opposed nations fight a global struggle for political influence during this lengthy time period, but also, each side believed that the other was bent on its annihilation.
QUESTIONS:
1. What does this clip convey about Americans’ attitude towards the atomic bomb and the Cold War during the 1940s and 1950s?
2. Do you think this film is propaganda: the active manipulation of opinion by distortion or concealment of the truth? Why or why not?
