GCU Health & Medical Functional Health Patterns Paper

Using Gordon’s functional health patterns is beneficial because it covers 11 topics to get a thorough assessment of the patient and family in order to best assist their needs. The eleven headings it covers are: health perception, health management, nutritional-metabolic, elimination, activity and exercise, sleep/rest, cognition and perception, self-perception and self-concept, roles and relationships, sexuality and reproduction, coping and stress tolerance, values and beliefs. Asking questions regarding these topics will provide answers that will assist in making a plan of care that is individualized for the patient and family (Hooper, 1996, p. 242)
A disease that deals with elimination complexity is called Nemaline Myopathy. It’s a rare congenital neuromuscular disease causing low tone. People are born with this condition and it is so rare that it is often difficult to get a diagnosis. The low tone affects the entire body especially with feeding, being able to sit up, walk and eliminating. The GI muscles are slow to absorb the nutrients that are often supplements through G-tube and the patient may vomit and/or suffer from constipation. This can then lead to respiratory complications (Wang et al., 2012, p. 378). Coping a stress tolerance is a huge role in getting families help because it is hard to see a loved one suffering and getting them all the available resources can aid in supporting them after a thorough assessment.
