There is a CTCA (Cancer Treatment Centers of America) hospital in Newnan, GA, where I visitied with my family. I spoke with one of the nurses there, who told me that the hospital prefers highering people who have had personal experiences with cancer from among their loved ones, as this makes them more able to give good care. Whether that was true or not, I’m not sure, but it would make sense. I think that’s really the only way to empathize with others – it to understand the suffering they are facing. I’m not quite sure that’s something that can be taught, though I’ve certainly seen the videos and reading materials hospitals are using to try and get more of an emotional response from their staff. I suppose that we learn to empathize more as we get older and go through things ourselves too.
