Grand Canyon University Intrinsic Motivation Discussion

It is essential for healthcare workers to have intrinsic motivation. People in healthcare usually love their jobs and are in it to make a difference. Extrinsic motivation only will lead to failure in healthcare. The focus on extrinsic motivators only could lead to burn out and poor quality of care. Studies have shown that monetary inducement decrease motivation, innovation and performance. Clinical engagement requires intrinsic motivation since jobs in healthcare are not easy but rather stressful, the reward cannot come from money but within the individual. Many of the times our jobs are priceless, there are many people that tell me “I can’t never do what you do” and I say to that “but I love what I do.”
