HC 463 Park University Week 5 Patient Safety Discussion
Introduction
Patient safety, defined by the World Health Organization as “the prevention of errors and adverse effects to patients associated with health care,” has become a priority in health care settings. Most of the research and focus in this field so far has focused on hospital settings. However, the vast majority of health care consultations actually take place in primary care.
Aligned to ULO(s)

Initial Post
Read the following article.
Levinson, D.R. (2010). Adverse events in hospitals: National incidence among Medicare beneficiaries. In Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. OEI – 06-09-0090-00090. Retrieved from http://oig.hhs.gov/oei/reports/oei-06-09-00090.pdf
Think about a time when you, your relative, or your friend was a patient in a hospital or other health care setting.
Discuss the following:
How safe it felt in your perception. On a scale from 0% to 100%, how would you rate the degree of safety/security that you felt?
The factors that contributed to your perception of safety.
The specific clinical safety practices that you noticed (Use the tables from the Office of Inspector General article to see a list of possible adverse events (Levinson, 2010, p.16, p. 21).
List at least three initiatives that could have been done to improve your perception of safety. Support the rationale for these suggested initiatives by scholarly sources.
The initial posting should be prepared as a Microsoft™ Word document, and then posted directly to the discussion thread and also attached to the unit discussion thread. There is no minimum or maximum in terms of the word count; however, the response should explicitly address all required components of this discussion assignment. The document should be prepared as a practical business deliverable (single-spaced) and reflect higher-level cognitive processing (analysis, synthesis, and evaluation).
Support the initial posting with at least 3 references of credible or peer-reviewed sources. The in-text citations and the list of references should be consistent with the APA writing style (7th ed.). To earn the maximum number of points for the initial posting, the overall quality of the writing should be consistent with that expected of a college student and industry professional.
Peer Responses
It is important that healthcare managers become comfortable receiving and giving constructive criticisms, since this is an important component in one’s professional growth and development, and a core competency for supervisory roles. Students will be expected to read the initial posting of at least TWO peers, and then provide thoughtful comments addressing the following:
Point out what you perceived to be the strengths of the initial posting along with supporting rationale.
Identify specific opportunities for improvement regarding the content in the initial posting. Furthermore, you should provide supporting rationale for your stated position, as well as concrete suggestions and guidance intended to strengthen the effectiveness of the content.
