Thomas Nast was known as the “Father of the political cartoon.” He impacted politics & government in the Gilded Age. After reading the text and the articles provided on the political cartoons, view the political cartoons slide presentation. Then answer the following questions: Identify how Nast was an influence for change as “Father of the political cartoon.” Could any of the images be used today to criticize the current culture/economy/government? How do political cartoons or media impact politics today? Fully explain your answers and give specific examples when needed. You are welcome to share political cartoons in the discussion board.

To receive full credit for this assignment your post must:

In the interest of allowing you, as young historians, to follow your own interests, please select one of the following topics to address.Garfield’s Assassination: After reading your text and reviewing the assigned materials, submit an analysis of the assassination and medical treatment of President James Garfield. You might consider the following questions, but you are not limited to them: What surprised you about Garfield’s assassination? How did medical knowledge of the time impact Garfield’s medical care? Should Guiteau have been charged with murder or attempted murder? Should he have been executed or was he criminally insane?Chinese Immigration and Legislation: After reading your text and reviewing the assigned materials, submit an analysis of Chinese immigration and anti-Chinese legislation. You might want to consider the following questions, but you are not limited to them: In what ways were Chinese immigrants different from other immigrant groups? What does the passage of local and federal laws tell us about the attitudes towards Chinese immigrants specifically? To what extent was the annexation of Hawaii a partisan issue? Why do you believe that Hawaii was ultimately annexed as part of the United States?
After reading your text and reviewing the assigned materials, submit an analysis of the Philippine-American War.

Philippine-American War: You might want to consider the following questions, but you are not limited to them: How do the primary sources from the war compare to later interpretations of the war? To what extent does the current political and social climate affect our understanding of the past? Which interpretation of the Philippine-American War is the most convincing to you and why?
