Marriage and family discussion post
1) Apply this chapter’s contents to your own life experience with the institutions of marriage and the family. What social factors affect your family life? In what ways is your family life different from that of your grandparents?
2) Have social media and internet dating sites transformed the courtship process? In what ways? What social factors might explain the rise in usage of dating sites (Match, Bumble, Hinge, Tinder etc) and social media as a tool to seek out love, romance, sex and companionship?
3) Post a response to another classmate’s posting, discussing your thoughts of their post in a respectful and thoughtful manner. What stood out to you about their analysis?
I attached below a power point of the chapter if needed.
Classmates response: Family relationships will be impacted by a variety of factors. Your social class, your family’s structure and type, your income or lack thereof, your culture, religion, and ethnicity All of those variables will shape the people living in the household because the family is the only structure that can provide fundamental socialization. One of the ways that my grandparent’s family life was different is that my grandpa was the one who took care of the family by economically providing for it, so he was the one who would work, while on the other hand, my grandmother would take care of the family by cooking meals, cleaning the house, etc. In my family life, I notice that both my parents work every day, and both of them try to help each other out by cooking, cleaning the house, or taking care of us kids.
I do believe that social media and internet dating sites have indeed transformed the courtship process. One of the good ways that both social media and internet dating sites help is that you can move on to the next person if you like somebody and they don’t like you. Since you receive a couple of matches for every rejection, there is no need to be afraid of failure. The use of social media has made it incredibly simple to share even the most private details of one’s life and express feelings. The negative aspects are that it has killed chivalry; if you use social media, you can know almost everything about someone. Many express romantic interests by commenting on or liking a post instead of being able to actually compliment someone on an actual date.
