MI 5100: Survey of Biomedical Informatics
Biomedical Informatics Program
Dr. Meena Vora, Course Instructor
Background on Problem
This goal of this assignment is to help you understand how Evidence Based Medicine helps the physicians in making educated decisions to benefit their patient’s health. As a physician, you will calculate various indices to determine the effectivity and cost of the drugs for your patients.
Please fill in all details at the prompts in the .slide #5
A sales representative visits your practice of orthopedic surgery and claims that drug he/she is offering, Fosamax® (alendronate) will decrease the incidence of repeat hip fracture by 50% over 3 years. Before you get too excited, you want to evaluate its effectivity on your patients. You do e-research and find out that fracture occurs in 2.2% of placebo patients and 1.1% of patients on Fosamax® (alendronate )
A sales representative visits your practice of Cardiology and claims that drug he/she is offering, Plavix® (clopidogrel ) decreases cardiovascular events by 8.7% compared to aspirin. A review of the 1996 article reveals that study patients on Plavix® experienced cardiovascular events 9.78% of the time compared to 10.64% of the time with aspirin.
You will need to
Understand how the data given to you in the slide map to the terms that are required to calculate the Cost of Preventing the Event (COPE).
Find out the cost of the medicine.
Find out the dosage required
Find out the total cost of medicine for a month (1 point)
Find out the total cost of medicine for a day (.5 point)
Calculate ARR (.5 point)
Calculate NNT (.5 point)
Calculate COPE ( 1 point)
Provide your conclusion that which medicine would you choose assuming that both patented and generic have the same effect. (.5 point) This assignment is worth a total of 8 points ( 4 points for each problem)
