1.Formerly powerful empires such as the Qing Dynasty, the Tokugawa Shogunate and theOttoman Empire all encountered European industrial power in different ways. What, in youropinion, were the most important historical factors contributing the ultimate fates of theseempires as they dealt with Western intrusion? AND, what factors were present, but did notcontribute as significantly?

Though industrialization has long been considered one step further in the overall progressof mankind, critiques of industrialization exist today, just as they existed in the 18th and 19thcenturies. To what extent has historical evidence allowed us to see the processes ofindustrialization as “progress,” and in what respects does the evidence allows us to considerthese process of industrialization to be detrimental?
