Salisbury University Family Intervention Project Paper
Part I
Each student must pick one of the following case studies to examine.
Part II
Use the case study you selected to answer the following:
- Assessment
What is the presenting problem that is being experienced by the family system in case you selected?
How is the problem impacting the family as a whole, as well as the family subsystems?
- What are the family’s strengths and how are these strengths useful in helping to address the family’s needs?
Which stage(s) of the family life cycle is present and how the family’s current stage may be impacting their needs and overall functioning.
Diversity and Culture
Using the Privilege and Oppression Wheel, identify at least two identities of the family which make them vulnerable to oppression (e.g. race, gender, social class, and so on). Be sure to discuss how their identities intersect.
Does the family’s cultural background impact their experience with the presenting problem(s)? If so, how?
How would cultural competence, cultural humility, or cultural sensitivity help you to engage with the family members?
Theories
Identify which of the following theories you would use to address the identified (presenting) problem (s). Discuss why you chose this theoretical perspective. (Refer to chapters 11 and 12 in the Collins et al., textbook; make sure to cite your source).
- Behavioral Family Approach
- Structural Family Systems Approach (Minuchin)
- Solution Focused Theory (Approach)
- Narrative Family Approach
Intervention
Find one intervention article (empirical or nonempirical) that describes a FAMILY BASED INTERVENTION. It should align with the theory you selected.
Case study articles are acceptable.
- Possible journals: Child Welfare, Social Work With Groups, Families in Society, Social Work, Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, or other related journals.
Examples articles (DO NOT CHOOSE THESE FOR YOUR ASSIGNMENT):
Answer the following questions about the intervention article:
Describe the family intervention within the article and how it relates to the theory and family you chose for your case study above.
Include your own appraisal of the article and comment specifically on one or two strategies from the intervention that will be especially helpful in working with the family from the case study.
- Based upon the theory and intervention you chose, create an intervention plan with 1 SMART Goal with 2 SMART objectives(click here for information on SMART goals: resource 1 and resource 2) that you could use to address the identified problem (s) with the family.
The goal should connect to the theory you have chosen.
