Writing Assignment # 1. Problem Statement from Multiple Perspectives/Interviews… a Four Page Reflection Paper

(CO ,7.8, & 9)

  1. Individually, each student will draft a statement of what they see as a social problem on the macro level experienced by clients at your agency placement. Indicate the agency, the arena and population impacted by the macro social problem.
    See problem analysis below*
  1. Then speak with three *stakeholders to get their ideas of what they see as a macro social problem.
Include comments from two clients and one staff member/professional in the area or family member.
  1. Include the length and time the social problem has been evident and the cost to the individuals experiencing the problem and those perpetuating the problem. Indicate the arena/locality where the social problem is evident, the population effected, and the change that is needed.
  1. Critically reflect on what was learned from the stakeholders about the social problem. In your critical reflection, answer the questions:
How does your interview inform your understanding of the social problem?
What were you surprised to learn?
Did you all see the problem the needs the same way?

*Problem Analysis: a clear definition of the social problem on the macro-level (affects a large number of people), including the length of time of the social problem, has been evident and the cost of the problem to individuals experiencing the problem and those perpetuating/benefiting from the problem (This will need to be very specific. For example, although poverty is a social problem, you can get more specific- low wages, high cost of living, limited affordable housing and so on…)

  • Arena: the locality or arena where the social problem is evident and where the change will take place (Although the social problem identified may be evident in multiple communities (i.e., police brutality, teenage pregnancy, homelessness), the team will need to explore a specific community to define the problem and subsequent interventions
  • Population: an exploration of the population that is most affected by the social problem (including demographics). This social problem may affect a diverse group of people, but there is most likely a group that the problem disproportionately affects. What are their characteristics? Tip: Explore U.S. Census data, American Fact Finder, and PEW Research Center).
