San Diego City College Theoretical Paradigms Used in Sociology Essay

Learning Assessment #4 will be comprised of a list of five class concepts that you will explain in 2-3 sentences using one reading to support each explanation.

Here’s an example of a concept explanation that demonstrates full understanding (this concept will not be on the assessment):

Symbolic-Interactionism: One of the theoretical paradigms used in Sociology that focuses on how shared meanings are socially constructed through individual interactions. It is the only approach that uses a micro level of analysis to explain broad social patterns. An example of this approach being used is our reading on interactions in public restrooms (Cahill).

For this topical quiz, you are going to generate a list of important concepts from topics in the second half of the semester (Health Disparities and Social Movements to Social Change). This will give you plenty of time to review for the assessment AND more practice writing an explanation.

For this first part of the assignment, use the learning objectives from the last two topics of the semester to identify ten important concepts. For instance, the “sociological imagination” and “social problem” are important concepts from the first topic of the semester. The ten concepts should be drawn from all the two topics evenly. Write down those ten concepts in your post. (5 points)

Second, define and explain ONE of those ten concepts, theories, or terms that you listed. After you post your ten items, with ONE of them defined and explained, look at what other students posted. In the comments of one other student, define and explain one concept, theory, or term from their list that has NOT been defined by another student on the discussion already. If you define a concept/theory/term that has been covered already, you will not pass this assignment. (5 points)

So, your post will look like this…

1. SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONISM: One of the theoretical paradigms used in Sociology that focuses on how shared meanings are socially constructed through individual interactions. It is the only approach that uses a micro level of analysis to explain broad social patterns. An example of this approach is our reading on interactions in public restrooms (Cahill).

10. CONCEPT:

Notice that the two to three sentence definition of that concept is specific to the content of this course, which means that using Wikipedia or Google can help, but you need to use a reading to make your response specific to this course. Remember to cite at least one reading from the syllabus in your answer and to use the full space allowed. You will be required to use a different reading for each concept on the assessment. Practice using other readings besides the textbook and show off your knowledge! The intention here is to help you study TOGETHER, so the sooner you do this and more effort you put into the concepts you choose and explain, the better you’ll understand these important concepts! https://youtu.be/Gg1q6IOJ4cc
