SOCI 1001 LU Sociological Theory Discussion

1-Objective: The idea of this assignment is to give students an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the sociological imagination and apply it to your personal life. In this assignment you will be asked to apply the concept developed by C.W. Mills to the “corners” in your life.  Specifically, you’re asked to write about the ways that social structure has had on an impact in your own lives and to consider the broader social impact of those structures.

INSTRUCTIONS: To understand peoples’ behavior, sociologists look at their social location in society. For this assignment, I am asking you to identify the corners in life that you occupy (the structures that shape you) by describing your jobs, class, income, religion, education, gender, age, and race-ethnicity. Describe and explain how two of these elements influence your self concept, behavior, and life chances. In your explanation, be sure to utilize of one of the major theoretical perspectives (symbolic interactionist, structural functionalist, conflict) to discuss what sociologists describe as seeing the personal in the broader social context. Then select the 2 elements you chose and change them (for example, your ethnicity from Japanese American to Mexican) and describe what differences might exist in your: self-concept, behavior and life chances if you occupied these social locations instead. In your explanation be sure to identify ‘how you know this’; are you using common sense, past experiences, stereotypes, research, etc? Explain. REQUIREMENTS: This paper will include: 1) A detailed and organized description of the way you have been “socially constructed”. 2) The application of one of the major theoretical perspectives covered in Chapter 1

2.Apply a sociological theory to race/ethnicity as discussed in your textbook. Give examples (do not just state the example in the textbook-analyze). (200 words)
