SOCY 100 UMGC The Use of Social Media by Young People Paper
Assignment instructions:
write down the first Primary steps of the scientific method. Think of
a broad topic that you are interested in and which would make a good
sociological study—for example, ethnic diversity in a college,
homecoming rituals, athletic scholarships, or drunk driving.
Now, take that topic through the first 3 steps of the process. For each step, write a few sentences or a paragraph: (1) Ask a question about the topic or questions. (2) Do some research using the UMUC Library or other resources and write down the titles of a minimum of three articles or books you’d want to read about your topic. (3) indicate how your proposed study would be different from other studies.
To see exactly what I mean by “Ask a question,” research existing sources, and formulate a hypothesis please review pages 34-38 in the weekly reading material: Chapter 2. Sociological Research.
(4) After reviewing or re-reading this week’s course material try developing one hypothesis for your research. Try to follow the pattern for writing hypotheses found in the readings. The important thing to remember when creating a hypothesis is to answer the question — can it be empirically tested. For example, if you were going to use a survey to collect data how might you measure the variables or concepts in your hypotheses on the survey…What questions would you use?
