SOW3314 Contracting
Module 4 Establishing a Contract
The next step in the Roberts-Degennaro model of case management is to establish a contract (Frankel et al., 2019, p.13). While this may not be appropriate to all settings, it is a useful task to undertake, as it gives you targeted guidance on your comprehensive approach. For this exercise, we are going to assume that we are engaged in short term intervention with the intent to evaluate and close the case by the end of the semester. Create a contract that addresses your primary 5 goals for the client from your case plan. “There are four components of a good contract between a worker and client: client involvement, behavioral specificity in goal setting, consequences for compliance, and a specified time frame” (Frankel et al., 2019, p.90). Therefore, make sure each goal is clearly defined with specific behaviors that reflect the benchmark and how often they should occur. You should also add a positive or negative reinforcement that states what will occur if the client meets the goal or, on the converse, what will happen if the client doesn’t. Try to tailor this to your desired setting. For example, correctional inmates may have different repercussions than private therapy clients. The easiest way to approach this is:
1a. Specific goal
1b. Consequence
Continue in this format with 2a 2b-5a 5b. College-level writing in regards to grammar and mechanics is expected. Chapter 7 elaborates further on contracting if you need further guidance.
