SPU Introduction To Sociology Essay

All the usual writing rules apply (section titles, citing, and using class material, though this paper allows more outside sources.)

Introduction: (what is this paper about and what will it do)

What is sociology?

What was your project about?
Why is it important?
What did you do? For service/research? For internet research?
Be detailed and walk us through the steps and why. In science, our methods always have to be explained.

  1. What did you learn from your service, research, and internet research? Observations? Quantitative data?
Internet articles on the topic ?
(This is not yet the solutions part. This is just what you learned from studying the topic, before solutions.)

How is your service/research topic related to sociology?
And how is what you learned related to sociology?
This is “analysis,” making connections between things we learned and new topics. Using the material to “think” more thoroughly.
(Pick any ideas from readings, papers, discussion boards…make connections to your topic. Your job is to show off some sociology knowledge and your ability to apply it to a new topic. You can use sociology theories like conflict, symbolic interactionism, feminist, or critical race…you can use culture, or social stratification, or institutions like the family, the economy, health/healthcare…). (I will throw out more suggestions in class.)

  1. Based on what you learned, what are some structural solutions to the problem you are addressing (expand on your program recommendation)?
Be detailed. Think this through. What would a sociologist say is the solution rather than just pulling drowning people out of the water? Use what we learned in class, your service
  2. Explain Professor Trillo’s argument about the limits of traditional community service and the importance of finding solutions in the U.S. What do you think about this debate between service and doing research to find solutions? Take a moment to reflect on how you feel about going through the process of finding more solutions rather than service. Share your thoughts and outlook.
