Strayer University The Pledge to Eliminate Poverty Discussion
The Pledge to Eliminate Poverty
As Hite and Seitz (2016) discuss in Chapter 2: Wealth and Poverty, the Millennium Development Goals were created to provide developing countries support through the partnership of developed countries. The first goal is to “eradicate extreme poverty and hunger” in the world.
According to the textbook, population is still increasing in the world’s poorest regions. Take a look at the Millennium Development Goals report (https://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/2015_MDG_Report/pdf/MDG%202015%20rev%20(July%201).pdf).
The report notes that progress in reducing extreme hunger is uneven across regions and countries. Looking at the graph on page 14 of the report, which countries have the least reduction in extreme hunger? Which countries have the greatest reduction in extreme hunger? What factors contribute to this uneven progress? What are some possible strategies for creating more progress in these countries?
2 PEER REVIEW #1 (TYRONE)
Hello Everyone,
According to the reports on page 14, the countries that have the least reduction in extreme hunger are Sub-Saharan Africa and Western Asia. The countries with the greatest reductions are Eastern Asia (China only) and South-East Asia. One factor that contributes to this uneven progress is climate change. Some areas have extreme temperatures, and others have excessive rainfall. Too much or too little of each can destroy harvest and become devastating to animals. Another factor is food waste. “According to the World Food Programme, 1/3 of all food produced — over 1.3 billion tons of it — is never consumed. https://www.concernusa.org/story/top-causes-world-hunger/” That is a staggering statistic. That factor also trickles down to other factors as well. One possible strategy to create more progress in these countries is to simply donate. Both cash and food can begin as a healthy start. Another possible strategy is government intervention. Government policies can be more supportive of foreign aid and even on a national level as well. With the statistics of how much food we waste, the government can intervene and provide that to the homeless and the poor.
3) PEER REVIEW #2 (SHARON)
Hi Professor and Classmates,
The report shows that Sub-Saharan African and Western Asia have the least reduction in extreme hunger. Eastern Asia (Excluding China) and Southeast Asia have the greatest reduction in hunger. The factors that contribute to this uneven progress is that the climate change that brings extreme weather that destroys these countries farmland used for their food supply. Also, in some countries, political instability and civil strife have aggravated the effects of natural disasters that result in numerous humanitarian crises (1). One solution would be to offer some type of education on how to reduce greenhouse gases that may slow the extreme weather that these countries receive. Secondly, I think that the richer countries’ governments should come together and support these countries during these disasters by having a plan in place the will provide these countries with the assistance they need until they can get back up on their feet.
