SYG 2000 Family Conflict Theory & Symbolic Interactionism Essay

Choose an institution in our society. There are a list of suggestions below. Answer the following questions:

1.How would a functionalist describe the role of this institution? Be sure to include a manifest function, latent function, and dysfunction associated with this institution.

2. How would a conflict theorist describe the role of this institution? Who has power? Who does not? How is power maintained/challenged?

3. How would a symbolic interactionist describe the role of this institution? Think about the role of language and other symbolic interactionist concepts such as the looking glass self, front stage/backstage behavior, the generalized other, and/or stigma. You do not need to delve into all of these but choose at least one to explore in depth.
