Theatre & Culture Play Response 2 1. Watch the play. You are playing the role of theater critic. (Refer to Chapter 13 for more information on the role of the critic) 2. Write a critique in MLA format using the following outline: a. Opening paragraph: i. What did you watch? Which performance date and time? ii. Was it live or live streamed? What was the platform and cost? iii. What was the intended audience? b. Paragraph 1: Summarize the experience of attending the play. c. Paragraph 2/3/4: Summarize the play as vividly as possible for the audience who has yet to see the play. i. Discuss acting and design and also any other theatrical elements that stand out to you. d. Paragraph 5/6/7: Determine what the work was trying to do, i.e.: What was the theatrical function? Artifact? Commentary? Entertainment? i. Explain how well the work has done it ii. Was it worth doing? Why or why not? e. Conclusion: i. Statement of overall success or failure ii. Back up you statement with you most important examples. iii. Strong sentence that highlights the success or failure of the show’s theatrical function. This paper will be about 8 well-written paragraphs. Please no more than 10, no less than 5.
