UCSD Marxian and Du Boisian Perspectives Question
“To study is not to consume ideas, but to create and re-create them.”-Paulo Freire
In this quiz work with the readings, lectures, and cultural texts (i.e., music, artwork, documentaries/movies) discussed in class. Your notes can be used on this quiz, but it must include all three components listed above. You must also incorporate and discuss the key concepts discussed in lecture (at least 3 per question). You should write around 400-450 words per question.
Your answer should be a short essay response with citations. What is most important is that you engage these questions and make connections!
Answer 2 of the 3 questions below. Each question is worth 10 points.
- According to Karl Marx, social theory can become a “material force as soon as it has gripped the masses.” He also said that we should not only interpret the world, but change it. What does he mean by these statements? How does Freire’s “Act of Study,” Mao’s “Where do Correct Ideas Come From?” and Audre Lorde’s “Master’s Tools” build on Marx’s perspective?
2. How does DuBois’s chapter and essay complicate Marx’s argument of social theory gripping the masses? What political issues does Du Bois discuss?
- What does Fanon’s perspective on colonialism and decolonization provide us? What can we learn from his perspective on violence? How are his ideas reflected in the film The Battle of Algiers and the anti-imperialist struggles in the documentary Concerning Violence?
