Webster defines vocation as “a summons or a strong inclination to a particular state or course of action” or the English language learners definition is “a strong desire to spend your life doing a certain work (such as religious work)”, (Merriam-Webster, 2019).

A job is something a person does to earn money. Vocations seem to contain a deeper level of passion and purpose. When getting paid, it could be a job or a vocation depending on the motivation of the person. Those who believe God has providence over their lives often view their places of employment as vocations, regardless of what they do. They believe God put them there, in that place for a specific reason. With that stated purpose, it is easy to feel a deeper meaning for even the smallest or most tedious job, because it is being done to glorify God. Any job can then become a vocational ministry for others through actions, behavior, and examples.

One might hope, however, that as we chose this field to enter, we might already view this field as something we were “called into”. When our desire to work in this field is married with the call from God to do whatever we are doing for His glory, then that should be the best marriage of our interests and God’s purpose for our lives.
