A family preservation approach to child protection assumes that child welfare professionals should try to keep families together whenever it is safe to do so and should work to stabilize and support families to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect. In this Assignment, you will read about the Wilson-Joseph family which is at high risk of separation. As you read through the scenario, you will notice a number of issues that pose risks for the children. However, you will also see evidence of family members’ strengths and signs of strong relational bonds. What would be lost if a group of siblings was split up among several foster homes? What kinds of support do vulnerable families need to become stable and healthy?  

In this Assignment, you use the Wilson-Joseph case study to examine the purpose of family preservation and the risks and benefits of prioritizing family preservation over separation.

Explain why a social worker should strive to preserve the Wilson-Joseph family and how family preservation could benefit the children. 

Describe concerns or reservations you might experience in your family preservation work with the Wilson-Joseph family.
