Group Presentation, Discussion Leading – You will be asked one this quarter to work with a few other people on a short presentation about one of the episodes we have watched, including leading discussion concerning the episode. More information will be posted about this assignment. Course Description: This class will examine the Black Mirror Netflix series in relation to technological culture. We will watch different episodes each week, using them as a gateway to discuss a variety of topics related to digital media—artificial intelligence, digital companions, machine learning, surveillance, social media, online dating, virtual reality, interactive TV, gaming and more. We will read recent scholarship that illuminates the material that we encounter in each episode of Black Mirror while also focusing on theoretical texts that address technological dystopias in order to understand the relationship of the series to our contemporary world. Presentation Description: You have been pre-assigned small groups. Your group should chose a week and episode to present upon. Your goal during the 10 minute presentation will be to begin our discussion, creating questions that you want to ask your classmates about the episode, and connecting the episode to course ideas, concepts, and readings. Expectations: 1) First, you should find an example of a *real* news item, app, technology, or contemporary aspect of culture that relates to the episode and briefly describe this material as an example of how the episode connects to real life. As said before, Black Mirror often takes a technology from real life and exaggerates its potential future implications on society, so your group will want to identify what technologies and/or ideas about contemporary culture that the episode is playing with and then find an example from contemporary culture that illustrates the themes of the episode. 2) You should develop questions for class discussion that strive to provoke insight, analysis, and debate among your fellow students. Your questions could delve into the moral and ethical ideas that the episode brings up. As I have said again and again, Black Mirror is designed to provoke audiences to ponder the ethical problems surrounding certain technologies, so your questions could delve into some of these ethical quandaries.
