Journal Paper: Assignment Guidelines Life Span 2314: Professor Fauria 1. The purpose of this paper is to encourage you to view Human Development as a Science. Human Development is a science that depends on theories, data, analysis, critical thinking and methods similar to those used in daily science. The assignment requires you to review professional journals relevant to human development. Choose an article/topic that is of interest to you. Save the pdf to a file, read the article several times then write a paper about the article using American Psychological Association (APA) 6th edition style. To access Lone Star College System’s databases go to http://www.lonestar.edu/library/article-databases.html You will need a current student identification card to access the databases from home. A Bibliographic Instruction (BI) with a librarian may be necessary if you have never accessed the databases before. A resource librarian can explain how to look for an original research article from journals that are available through Lone Star College-Montgomery Library. Articles retrieved through a common search engine like Google, popular magazines like Psychology Today, or books are not appropriate for this assignment. A review of several articles or an opinion article is not acceptable either. Use the library’s search engines, (e.g., Academic Search Complete), to search for articles in the Social or Behavioral Sciences specific to Human Development. Examples of journals for review are; the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, Exceptional Children, the Journal of Developmental Education, the Journal of Counseling and Development or the Journal of Adult Development to name a few. 2. Your report must be written in APA 6th edition style. A peer review or the review of your paper by a staff person from the Write Place prior to submission is strongly recommended. The paper will be a five page, double-spaced, Word document, written in Times New Roman 12 font. The title page (i.e., page 1) should include a running head, the next three pages (i.e., pages 2-4) will include the body of your text with the eight required sections listed below, and the last page (i.e., page 5) will be the Reference page. 3. Report topics should be of interest to you and the article chosen should be current from within the last five years. The journal article you choose needs to be approved by me a week before the due date. Send the pdf file of the article to me via email. Later, when the assignment is due, resubmit the original article pdf that you used, along with a Word document of your Journal Paper to the Dropbox. You must properly cite the article you read at least twice within the text of your paper (APA 6th ed.). The Reference List Section at the end of your report on a separate page must be properly cited APA style (6th edition). A model paper is provided for you. 4. The text of your paper should consist of 8 parts: 1) A title page with running head, 2) an introduction, that explains the topic and why you chose it, 3) a summary of the research design, its hypothesis, assumptions, or theory the author used for the topic, 4) a description of the study’s quantitative/qualitative results and measurements, 5) the conclusions of the study, 6) a discussion of whether or not you agree with the study’s conclusions and what you would do to improve the study, 7) two reference citations in the text APA style, and 8) a Reference page. 5. Papers will be critically evaluated according to the following criteria: APA Style 60 points 40% Topic Knowledge 40 points 27% Organization 30 points 20% Mechanics 20 points 13% Total 150 points 100% *Please remember it is illegal to plagiarize.
