COMS ST 35 – Group Presentation Guidelines (3).docx
COMS ST 35

Presentation Guidelines

Directions: This interpersonal project involves a team approach to investigating and presenting a topic or issue in interpersonal communication. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate strategies for responding to criticism in a non-defensive manner, demonstrate skills in listening, verbal and non-verbal communication, and conflict management in a variety of settings, differentiate among the major principles and theories of interpersonal communication and their application to real and simulated communication acts and assess and evaluate an interpersonal communication interaction to identify problems and suggest more effective communication behaviors and approaches.

Teams will research ways that we can get involved to create a more interpersonal friendly world. Remember that the focus is on improving interpersonal skills, not just researching and presenting an issue. `

The groups will consist of 3-4 people. You are allowed to choose these groups and select the presentation date on your own (Based on availability of course).

Group presentations will be 10-15 minutes and will include the following:
2. Introduction: Explanation/description of chosen concepts from selected chapter. Provide a brief introduction on your chosen concepts and the importance of these concepts to interpersonal communication.
3. Connect your chosen issue/relevant topic: Based on the subject area you chose to focus on, explain where we can see this issue/problem today. You should bring in outside sources and present on a relevant topic. Include various perspectives your teammates have on this issue as well. This is where you introduce an interpersonal problem that is occurring today, either through popular culture, politics, news, etc. You can demonstrate this issue through an article, skit, video clip, etc.
1. Solution and Involvement: List of 3 or more solutions that we can use to take action in solving the interpersonal conflict presented. This is where you bring in concepts from your chapter and outside sources (informed by library research and our textbook—the team needs at least 3 sources, which must be cited during presentation. How can we use these concepts to solve the issue and prevent the issue from happening again.
4. Audience engagement and Conclusion: Provide an activity or discussion for your classmates. Please don’t stand up there and talk to us for the entire presentation. Be creative and get the class involved somehow (ask questions, start discussions, include exercises, incorporate visual aids, etc.) You may consult me for help on how to facilitate these ideas to the class. Also, provide a conclusion/wrap up.

Individual Project Paper (5 points)

Every group member is required to turn in a 1-2 page project paper of your experience as well as evaluate another group. The presentation you evaluate must be on a group that went a different day than your presentation. This is due the week after all presentations. You should include the following:

1. What was your presentation on? Explain relevant course concepts and what your group connected it to.

2. What message do you hope the class will take away from the presentation?

3. Evaluate the group project process and grade your teammates (Be honest, genuine, and realistic).

4. What presentation stood out most to you? Why? What did you enjoy about the presentation, what could have made it stronger?

Currently, culture conflict has been existed worldwide, people are seeking various solutions to solve the problem, so that we can live harmoniously. Concerning the solution of cultural conflicts, I shall introduce 5 detailed measures to smooth the problem. I hope my sharing on the solution can be helpful for everyone.

First, education is one critical way for us to enhance the understanding on culture variation. Previously, lack of education, people are centered by themselves, so that they often fought with each other to conquer others. With the development of education, people began to realize the world with new understanding. For example, through education, we can know about different politics and ideology in Western and Eastern world. We can make critical thinking on the difference, so that we can understand the culture conflicts from the theoretical aspects. Based on such ideology, we can maintain the difference, and also help each other to enhance the understanding.

The second solution is the recognition on difference. Difference is definitely existed among different groups. Even, the individuals in one group also has difference. We should understand the cause and effect of such difference for individuals and groups, so that we can live together with the same goal, but with different personalities. For example, there are many religions in USA, including Islam and Christianity. We should know about different religions are just affiliated to different groups. We should understand the gap among different religions, so that the culture conflicts can be solved well. We can respect each religion peacefully. Recognition of difference is a kind of respects for each other, thus, the culture conflict can be smoother.

The third point, and the most important point I should mention is we should reduce the stereotypes on culture and conflicts. Stereotype is the main obstacle for people to understand the quite different world. The main reason is that we cannot understand others comprehensively, or we shall be biased by others’ opinions, without any clarification. For example, we have stereotype on the black people, that they are dignity, ugly, with other bad images. Such negative image shall impact the relationship with black men. However, we still found that many black people around us are excellent, cute and well gathering. Another example, is that women are always considered as weak people, comparing with men. However, with higher education, and other cultivation, women can be equal with men, or even stronger. The discrimination on women, is caused by stereotype on women, so that many women are the victims. The stereotype harm the relationship between black people and others.

Furthermore, we should reduce ethnocentrism. I think under the globalization, USA shows complete ethnocentrism to the world, Americanization has spread to many other developing countries. For example, McDonald, KFC and other famous fast food restaurants have large market share in China, and other developing countries, to harm the local food restaurants. However, we should have correct attitude toward fast food and traditional food, as fast food is not higher than local food. Meanwhile, USA should also respect other cultures.

Finally, we should adjust our communication way. We can use more warm words and considering others’ feeling more without only self-concentration, the communication can be smoother. For example, love you, thank you, can enable better talk and communication effect. Without considering others’ feeling, the words may be serious, resulting quarrels, or even misunderstanding.

In conclusion, I share 5 solutions on culture conflict, including education, recognition on difference, the stereotypes and ethnocentrism reduction, and warm communication way. We can apply these methods into our daily life, to smooth the culture conflict. Thank you.
