Which theoretical perspective (functionalism or conflict) will you use to explain poverty in the US.

How to address this prompt:

  • Remember this prompt is about stratification –discuss why US society is stratified, focus on income inequality.
  • To earn full credit, use poverty among children as an example to discuss stratification in the US society.  Discuss main ideas from the theory you are using to explain poverty.  For example, if you are using functionalism, use Davis-Moore theory.  If you are using conflict theory, focus on exploitative nature of capitalist system and wide gaps in wages of regular workers and the top management. Please note that any claims you make should be based on facts.
