SOC 122 LAPC demonstrate understanding of content through engagement in your choice of media, research literature…

Directions

You will demonstrate your understanding of course content through engagement in or with your choice of media, research literature, or reflective forms of expression (e.g., photography, art). The idea is to build on what you’ve learned to explore dimensions and processes of social stratification in everyday social settings and artifacts. You will be graded on the breadth and depth of your analysis, including your application of course concepts to specific examples, and the sophistication of the connections you draw between those examples and course materials.

  1. A stratification playlist of at least 8 songs that address a theme from the course. Some examples of possible themes include the social construction of race and whiteness, education, intersectionality, ideology, gender, punishment and mass incarceration, and health disparities. Your theme should be broad enough that you can use a minimum of 4 class concepts in your analysis of it. If you’re not sure which theme to pick, come talk to me. You will submit your playlist with a 200-250 words explanation for each song and its relationship to your theme, along with an overall summary of 400-500 words of the playlist and its relevance to social stratification. The total word count should be between 2000-2500 words. Use parenthetical citations in your paper and include a list of references at the end (follow the format for the first two application assignments). For songs, use (artist, date). You do not need to include the songs in your references cited page, but please include all other materials you cite.
  2. A creative piece – a poem, art, photo series, song, etc., that expresses your ideas about social stratification in US society. Your piece should be accompanied by an explanatory essay (1200-1500 words) that includes at least 4 class concepts. Use parenthetical citations in your paper and include a list of references at the end (follow the format for the first two application assignments).
  3. A short research paper (2000-2500 words) on one of the topics we discussed in class. This option gives you the chance to learn more about a specific topic that interested you during the quarter. You will need to cite at least 2 concepts referenced in class, and you will also need to find a minimum of 4 outside sources (journal articles, news articles, books) to support your argument. Use parenthetical citations in your paper and include a list of references at the end (follow the format for the first two application assignments). For more detailed instructions on the research paper option, please see attached guidelines.
