define and describe stereotypes, provide four age stereotypes and explain how they can be used by people of all ages to affect peoples attitudes toward the elderly (including elderly toward themselves). Explain detrimental affects this might have on older adults. Do you ever stereotype the elderly yourself and if so, is it positive or negative and is it intentional? Please explain.
(2) Using Chapter 2 in Harris, explain what the baby boom is, when it occurred and the impact it has had over the decades as this generation has proceeded through the life course (how were things affected when the babies were born, when they entered public school, colleges, employment, etc.). Explain the impact that the baby boomers will have on other institutions as they turn 65. What type of impact do you believe this large number of older adults can have on society? (think of social security system, health care system, aging services, etc.) Do you believe society is prepared and if not why?
(3) Using Chapter 3 in Harris, explain what norms are, including the three types of norms; folkways, mores and laws explaining how they differ from each other. Explain how norms apply to aging. Are norms for older adults as clear cut as they are for children and younger adults? Please explain. What are some examples of folkways, mores and laws that exist in US society related to age. Why do you believe that they developed?
(4) Using Chapter 4 in Harris, please discuss the following four American core values: youth orientation, the work ethic, independence and self-reliance, education and progress. Please explain how each of these values affects the elderly.
