SU Energy Climate Crisis Discussion

1) DISCUSSION POST

The Cost of Natural Resources

As Hite and Seitz (2016) show in Chapter 4: Energy, the world is in the midst of an energy crisis as it concerns the rapid use and depletion of nonrenewable natural resources.

According to the textbook, “Many experts predict that the largest increase in demand for oil in the coming years will come from increasingly industrialized economies with large populations…” (p. 140)

Can this be offset by measures taken in developed nations to address the energy–climate crisis? Why or why not? What potential strategies could be used to reduce the demand for energy in industrialized economies with large populations?

Hello everyone,

Can this be offset by measures taken in developed nations to address the energy-climate crisis?

In my opinion, I think that this can be offset by measures taken in developed nations. I think that in all except the US. LOL. I say that because we are so wasteful, irresponsible and entitled. Typically, we don’t see that in any other country. I could be wrong. So yes, with other developed nations the way they steward resources, are grateful for opportunities and are not completely wasteful with their resources they may very well help offset energy-climate crisis.

What potential strategies could be used to reduce the demand for energy in industrialized economies with large populations?

I think one potential strategy is to electrify more vehicles and working equipment. I’m quite certain that more electric vehicles on the highways will cut down on emissions and oil consumption. Therefore, the demand for oil use will be reduced, right? I could be completely wrong. Even with construction equipment, technology now is advanced enough to create these machines that produce less air pollution and waste.

Prof. Lunsford and class

–I believe that it can be taken into developed nations to address the energy-climate crisis because the demand for oil is seen to be cleaner and more convenient to use.  Up through the end of the twentieth century, most of the increased energy use took place in the developed nations, but the trend changed by the twenty-first century.  According to the data in Figure 4.2 and Table 4.3 of the book, shows the world’s supply of energy by type and oil is seen to lead at 31 percent in the study made in 2012 where fossil fuels made up about 82 percent of the energy used.

These are a few strategies that I am familiar with to reduce energy demand
